World Cup Awards: James Rodriguez | Costa Rica | Brazil

Week 3 of the 2014 World Cup has seen of the most talked about incidents occur when Uruguay’s Luis Suarez completed a hat-trick of bites in his career when he sunk his gnashers into Italian defender Giorgio Chiellini’s shoulder.

We only have a Bad Week for Category in the Scotsman Weekly Website Awards, and that will be Suarez’s, as would be the Extremely Bad Week for or the Did he just do that Award if we presented them.

However keeping with the positive tone that most of this tournament has brought in over 50 games now, we are delighted to present Awards to winners in Brazil, Colombia, Costa Rica and Holland.

Good World Cup week for – Brazil

They got there, just! Brazil were held well by Chile and no-one would have grudged their progression to the quarter finals via the penalty shoot-out however for the sake of the tournament it was good that Brazil made it.

Their fans have added a level of passion to the World Cup 2014 and that level will continue until Friday night at least when Colombia look to knock the hosts out.

Bad World Cup week for – Luis Suarez (and Liverpool)

The Liverpool striker exited the tournament at the same time as his team made it through by seeing off Italy 1-0 in the Group stages. Biting an opponent once is poor, twice is daft and three times seems to confirm that their is an underlying issue with anger management.

FIFA acted swiftly however Liverpool are being punished severely as well and you can expect that to be challenged.

World Cup Team of the week – Costa Rica

The shock side of the tournament so far have made it all the way to the quarter finals. Scotland’s conquerors in Italia 1990 topped a group containing three former winners in Uruguay, Italy and England and then saw off Greece on penalties.

It is Netherlands that are up next and three weeks ago the Dutch would have been odds on favourites whereas now it does not look so straightforward.

World Cup Manager of the week – Louis van Gaal (Netherlands)

Not many managers would take Robin van Persie off with their side needing a goal to keep their World Cup hopes alive. The Manchester United-bound manager did just that against Mexico and was rewarded by his replacement Klaas-Jan Huntelaar scoring an injury time penalty to send the Netherlands through.

Three wins out of three in the Group Stages, top goalscorers in the competition and a quarter final berth booked made it a very good week for van Gaal.

World Cup Player of the week – James Rodriguez (Colombia)

When the World Cup commercials were getting made and the new fancy boots showcased Rodriguez was pretty far down the queue in being asked to appear. However four terrific performances and five goals later and a move to Real Madrid is being aired.

The Colombian number ten will now turn his attention to knocking out the hosts on Friday. Do that and the world will be his oyster even if no-one is quite sure how to pronounce his first name in a Spanish style.

World Cup Goal of the week – James Rodriguez (Colombia)

Rodriguez’s opening goal in their 2-0 win over Uruguay was a cracker and rewarded the front man for trying his luck. A high ball was played forward to Rodriguez who glanced around to check his bearings before controlling the ball on his chest.

He then swivelled on the spot and sent home a fierce left foot volley from 23 yards that smacked off the crossbar on its way into goal.
