What’s On In Scotland: Five things to do tonight

MUSIC: DEERHUNTER

Georgia-based indie rock band Deerhunter formed in 2001 and, despite a fair few line-up changes over the years, co-founders Bradford Cox and Moses Archuleta are still leading the group to great things. Deerhunter’s seventh and most recent album, Fading Frontier, was released last month, deeply influenced by a car crash which left frontman Cox seriously injured. Tonight the four-piece bring their critically acclaimed new record to Glasgow for its first Scottish airing.

COMEDY: MARK NELSON

Winning the very first Scottish Comedian of the Year Award in 2006 was really just the beginning for Mark Nelson, who had first performed stand-up only a year earlier. This evening the hilariously offensive Nelson headlines the monthly comedy night at The Green Room in Perth, with support from compere Jellybean Martinez and special guests Stuart Mitchell and Craig Johnstone.

THEATRE: HANDBAGGED

Susie Blake and Kate Fahy star in this witty comedy as the Queen and Margaret Thatcher respectively, born within a year of each other and both apparently destined to lead – but what did they really think of each other? Handbagged speculates on what two of Britain’s most powerful women may have said to each other behind closed doors at Buckingham Palace.

FILM: IT HAPPENED ONE NIGHT

Frank Capra’s 1934 romance and screwball comedy It Happened One Night comes to GFT for, appropriately enough, one night only. Transport yourself back in time and watch love blossom on-screen between a young Clark Gable and Hollywood starlet Claudette Colbert. Rich heiress Ellen (Colbert) attempts to escape her overpowering father and accidentally falls for roguish reporter Peter (Gable). The film won all five major Academy Awards on its release and was one of the last romantic comedies made before the prudish Motion Picture Production Code was enforced, which clamped down on sex and nudity in Hollywood.

OUTDOOR EXPERIENCE: DALZIEL PARK FIREWORKS NIGHT

Get into the spirit of Bonfire Night early at the spectacular Dalziel Park fireworks display this evening. This family-friendly event will have a barbecue serving hot dogs and burgers, as well as a well-stocked bar on site. The firework display starts at 7pm and all proceeds from the event will go to Beatson Cancer Charity.
