Scotland will go searching for their first points in Nations League A when they take on Portugal at Hampden on Tuesday.
Steve Clarke's side suffered a third successive defeat in the top tier of this UEFA competition when they went down to a 2-1 reverse against Croatia in Zagreb on Saturday. The defeat was another agonising one for the Tartan Army with Scotland cruelly denied a stoppage time equaliser after a VAR check found Che Adams had strayed offside prior to Kristijan Jakic netting an own goal.

Hide AdIt followed two last minute defeats to Poland and Portugal last month which have left Scotland bottom of Group A1 on zero points but with plenty plaudits for the way they have performed in their three matches so far.
Clarke and his players will hope their luck turns at Hampden on Tuesday but they face a tough task against a star-studded Portugal side featuring five-time Ballon d'Or winner Cristiano Ronaldo who sit top of the A1 standings with a maximum nine points.

Scotland v Portugal team news
Injuries continue to bite for Scotland. James Forrest missed the Croatia game through injury and then officially withdrew from the squad ahead of the Portugal game. In addition to the Celtic winger, Angus Gunn, Nathan Patterson, Aaron Hickey, Ross McCrorie, Scott McKenna, Jack Hendry, Kieran Tierney, Greg Taylor, John McGinn, Lewis Ferguson, Lawrence Shankland and Tommy Conway are all unavailable due to injury, exacerbating the impact of Callum McGregor’s recent retirement.

The lengthy injury list has created opportunities for others, with Scotland having seven players in their current squad hoping to make their full international debut. Goalkeepers Jon McCracken, Robby McCrorie, defenders Nicky Devlin, Jack MacKenzie and Liam Lindsay plus midfielders Connor Barron and Andy Irving all fall into the uncapped category.

Hide AdBen Doak shone on his first start for Scotland in Croatia on Saturday. The emergence of the 18-year-old Liverpool winger – currently on loan at Middlesbrough – has offered a glimmer of hope at a time when the national team is struggling for results. After his exertions in Zagreb, it remains to be seen if Doak will retain his place.
Portugal superstar Cristiano Ronaldo will play at Hampden for the first time in his career. The 39-year-old has played in Glasgow twice before, with Manchester United against Celtic in the Champions League in 2006 (a 1-0 defeat) and 2008 (a 1-1 draw). He returns to Scotland buoyed by having scored his 133rd international goal in Saturday’s 3-1 win over Poland on Saturday.
