Weary United U-19s are left eight-some reeling by Leith

LEITH ATHLETIC dumped Scottish Cup holders Edinburgh United in spectacular fashion in the final of the South East Region under-19 Youth Cup amid a barrage of ten goals at Dunbar's New Countess Park.

The score was tied at 2-2 with half an hour played but Leith went on to hit six goals to register an astounding result of 8-2 and claim the most prestigious trophy outside "the Scottish".

United were unrecognisable from the side that dismissed Blue Brazil to be crowned national champions earlier this month, and manager Barry Campbell bemoaned his side's heavy schedule.

He said "We've had too many games. I don't want to make excuses, but we've played three games in a week and had too many injuries."

Leith grabbed an early lead when Jack Combe converted a low cross from close range and Jason Stevens slipped the ball under the United goalkeeper.

Within seconds of the restart following Leith's second, United snatched a goal of their own through Josh Morris.

After half an hour, Michael Collin levelled the match with a powerful shot. But Leith went ahead ten minutes before half-time when William Bremner's shot deflected off the chest of team-mate Combe and beat United keeper Neil McArthur.

Combe completed his hat-trick on 51 minutes then Bremner finally got his name on the scoresheet with a thunderous 25-yard drive just after the hour.

David Menzies' left-wing cross was headed in by Combe, and another centre from Menzies allowed Steven Lynch to nod Leith's seventh. Lewis Martin's 88th-minute effort from just outside the box ended the scoring.

Paul Adamson, the Leith Athletic coach, said: "Hard work won it for us. It was tough out there with the heat and with strong opposition."
