Tweedmouth Juniors through to third round of South East Cup

The journey from the Scottish Borders was made worthwhile as two first-half goals from  Jonah Birkett and Dylan Patterson ensured their passage into the next round. Tweedmouth coach Andrew Dickson was delighted to finally get the Tynecastle monkey off his back. He said: “It’s the first time we’ve beaten Tynecastle in all the years we’ve been coming up here so it’s a special day. I think we can go the distance in this cup but any team on their day can win it. There’s still a long way to go.”

Tweedmouth grabbed the lead after 20 minutes when a long ball caught out a hesitant Tynecastle defence and Birkett raced through to coolly slot the opener past Danyal Walthew.

The visitors then doubled their advantage after 35 minutes. A free-kick from the left was lofted high into the hosts’ penalty area and the unmarked Patterson had all the time he needed to pick his spot and head past Walthew.

Tynecastle hauled themselves back into the game with 25 minutes remaining when Craig Sutherland fired home a superb free-kick after Elliot Grieve had been upended on the edge of the penalty area. Tynecastle rallied late on but were unable to find an equaliser. Tynie coach Andy Greig said: “I thought we started off really well and created a few chances. We gave away a soft first goal and didn’t track the runner for the second. I thought towards the end we might have nicked a goal and forced extra-time, but Tweedmouth played very well and I think overall it was probably a fair result.”
