Timbers give Spencer sack

FORMER Rangers, Chelsea and Scotland star John Spencer has been sacked as manager of struggling MLS outfit Portland Timbers.

The 41-year-old was appointed head coach in 2011 and signed a new three-year deal in January but his side have won just five of their 17 games this season (none away from home) and Saturday’s 3-0 defeat at Real Salt Lake, which leaves them second-bottom of the Western Conference, was the last straw for owner Merrit Paulson.

Spencer signed former Rangers and Scotland striker Kris Boyd in January but the 28-year-old has scored just five goals in 17 games.
