Third Division: Stranraer come from behind to grab top spot

Stranraer took full advantage of Alloa being idle as their scheduled opponents, Peterhead, were on Scottish Cup duty, to defeat hosts Montrose 3-1 and move back to the top of the table.

The Gable Endies struck in the third minute, when Martin Boyle shot home, but Stranraer pulled level seven minutes from the break when Sean Winter converted from a tight angle.

Stranraer went ahead on 73 minutes, Craig Malcolm scoring with a curling effort. Top spot was sealed 10 minutes later when Winter grabbed his second goal with the aid of a deflection.

Stranraer manager Keith Knox said: “We did not play well, but this is the type of game we may look back on at the end of the season and be very grateful for the three points.”

Annan got their promotion push going again by defeating visitors Clyde 1-0, thanks to a Sean O’Connor goal, to sit four points behind Stranraer with a game in hand.

Elgin City defeated bottom side East Stirling 3-1 at Borough Briggs. They led just before half- time through Stuart Leslie, but that joy was short-lived as Bradley Coyne scored from the penalty spot to level matters at the interval.

However, goals by Archie MacPhee and Jason Crooks secured the points for Elgin.
