Third Division: Six-goal Peterhead go third

Peterhead climbed into third spot in the Third Division before champions Rangers and second-placed Queen’s Park met at Hampden yesterday with a 6-0 win over bottom-of-the table East Stirlingshire.

A double from Rory McAllister plus goals from Martin Bavidge, Jamie Redman and Dean Cowie had them five ahead before half-time. Jim McInally’s side went easier on the Shire in the second half with only Redman netting his second as the Balmoor side made it an impressive four wins in a row.

Montrose slipped to fourth, a point behind Peterhead after Josh Flood scored late for visitors Stirling in a 2-2 draw.

The Forthbank men had led through Mark Ferry’s goal only for Martin Boyle to level. Ricky McIntosh then put the Gable Endies ahead with a quarter of the game left only for substitute Flood to restore parity 3 minutes from time with a header.

Fifth-placed Berwick, who struck up a promotion bid on the back of four wins in a row in March, saw their hopes of a play-off hit by a third successive defeat as they lost 2-1 at Clyde.

Kevin Watt gave the Bully Wee the lead before half-time with the visiting Steve Notman levelling the score 8 minutes after the restart.

John Sweeney then volleyed in a late winner to record Clyde’s third win in four games and the Borderers’ Chris Townsley was red-carded at full time for his comments to whistler Andrew Dallas.

Elgin thought that they were moving to within two points of a play-off place when Dennis Wyness edged the Borough Briggs side ahead in injury time at Annan, however David Hopkirk hit back straight away as the sides drew 2-2.

The game had been goalless until 21 minutes from time when Iain Chisholm gave the hosts the lead and Gavin Morrison levelled from a free kick.
