But while the beautiful game might be a universal language, Tennent’s Lager is making sure the local dialect doesn’t catch supporters on the hop – with a mobile app that will help them get a result.

The new Tartan Army Pointers App is a visual aid for fans when they are communicating with locals.

All essential amenities are covered: public transport, hotel rooms, stadiums, beer and more all feature within the app. Fans simply need to select the desired service and point.

Based on the paper guides previously given to Tartan Army followers, the new app will be able to used at all of the away matches during the Euro 2016 qualifying campaign, which begins in Dortmund on September 7 against Germany.

Jane Cannon, spokesperson for Tennent’s Lager, said: “The Tartan Army are renowned for their passion and dedication to supporting the national side, but like any traveller, sometimes getting around can be a bit of a challenge if you don’t know the language.

“The image of Scotland fans pointing at a book in order to find a pint brought a smile to our faces, so we thought we’d give the classic pointer book an update for 2014.

“It can’t make the referee point to the spot in Scotland’s favour on September 7, but hopefully by the final whistle we’ll all have something to celebrate.”

Jason Trotter was one of the first Tartan Army fans to download the app.

The 25-year-old, from Glasgow, said: “The app is absolutely brilliant. Scotland fans always put having a laugh ahead of knowing the language whenever they head off on tour. This does both.

“If I could keep a photo of my own flat on it then it might help me get back to my front door when the home matches take place!”

Football Pointers is available for Android and desktop.
