Stranraer stun East Fife to move clear of basement

STRANRAER’S improvement under recently appointed manager Stephen Aitken continued last night as they shocked hosts East Fife 1-0 just three days after defeating Alloa Athletic to move off the foot of the table.

The Blues twon the game 11 minutes from half-time when Robert Love set up Craig Malcolm and he sent a low shot home.

They then stood strong in the second half to move four points clear of bottom spot.

East Fife who had been on a run of three successive wins under their new manager Billy Brown worked hard to get level in the second half with Bobby Barr having a shot parried away by visiting goalkeeper David Mitchell with an hour gone.

Collin Samuel headed over shortly afterwards with Jamie Pollock and Craig Johnstone also going close, however the Stair Park side took all three points home with them in what was their first away vistory in the league this season.

There was an added bonus for the Galloway outfit as they moved further away from bottom side Albion Rovers thanks to a last-gasp goal at Cliftonhill that saw Forfar Athletic snatch a 3-2 win.

The Rovers had battled back from two goals down, however two minutes into injury time Martyn Fotheringham curled over a corner onto and Barry Sellars sent a first time volley through a sea of bodies and into the net.

Forfar had stunned their hosts with a goal after 33 seconds with a simple move down the right where Ross Campbell found Mark McCulloch and he slipped the ball inside to James Craigen who side-stepped his marker before curling a left foot shot high into the net.

A second Forfar goal arrived on 24 minutes when Ross Campbell darted up the left and picked out Craigen and he smashed a right footed shot home.

The home side got back into things on 35 minutes when the ball ran kindly for Chris Boyle to lash home from 14 yards and they levelled four minutes later when a long free-kick from goalkeeper Matthew McGinley allowed Christie Elliott to release Steven Howarth and he slipped the ball home.

It looked like a chance laden second half would finish with no scoring until Sellars super strike.
