Strachan makes Dalglish comparison over Chris Martin booing

Scotland boss Gordon Strachan believes goalscorer Chris Martin to be in 'great company' after the striker was booed by the Hampden Park crowd.

The Fulham striker came off the bench to replace James Morrison with eight minutes remaining in the World Cup qualifier against Slovenia, a substitution that clearly rankled with the home support.

He would later go on to score the winning goal, driving Stuart Armstrong’s through ball off the inside of the far post and keeping Scotland’s slim qualification hopes alive.

When asked about the reception the player received, Strachan compared him to Scotland greats of the past who, at one time or another, found themselves on the receiving end of criticism from the Tartan Army.

He told Sky Sports: “He gets a good reception from the players and the staff, that’s why we pick him. He’s different from what we’ve got.

“He’s in great company you know. Kenny Dalglish used to get booed, so did Gary McAllister and Alan Hansen, how’s that for company? To join that he must be some player.”
