Stiliyan Petrov plans return to football after cancer fight

Former Celtic midfielder Stiliyan Petrov is planning on making a comeback to professional football for the first time in four years after winning his battle with leukaemia.

Petrov was diagnosed with the illness in early 2012 and would officially retire from the game at the conclusion of the 2012/13 campaign.

However, since beating cancer, he’s been training regularly with Aston Villa’s under-21s side and hopes to make a return to the first team.

Petrov was Villa captain at the time of his diagnosis. He is currently a member of the Villa Park coaching staff.

The Bulgarian played with Celtic for seven years, helping the club to four league titles and six domestic cups.
