Steven Fletcher picks up player of the month award

STEVEN Fletcher has continued an eventful few days by being named the Barclays Player of the Month for September.

Fletcher, who this week returned to the Scotland squad after resolving a rift with manager Craig Levein, has been in fine goalscoring form since moving from Wolverhampton Wanderers to Sunderland in the summer in a deal worth £12 million.

In September alone, the striker grabbed five goals in four matches, helping Martin O’Neill’s Sunderland side remain unbeaten throughout the month.

He netted a brace on his Barclays Premier League debut against Swansea and also found the back of the net on his home league bow against Liverpool.

Fletcher then followed up with a goal at West Ham United as well as the winner against Wigan at the Stadium of Light, and,
as a result, he yesterday picked up the Premier League’s monthly player award.

“I’m obviously pleased with the award, but results are more important,” said Fletcher, who is expected to feature in Scotland’s forthcoming World Cup qualifying double-header
in Wales and Belgium.

“To stay unbeaten in September was a real positive for the lads and
I’m pleased I grabbed a
few goals as well.”
