Thompson was the target for abuse from fans during and after Dundee United’s 3-1 defeat by Hamilton Accies on Sunday. The loss left Dundee United eight points adrift at the bottom of the Premiership, with four games left. They now face the possibility of having relegation to the Championship confirmed on Monday at the home of neighbours Dundee.

Thompson, who owns a near 53 per cent stake in the club, is seeking further investment to help cushion the financial blow in the event of relegation. But he could also be willing to step away completely.

He has come under heavier and heavier fire in recent months with United stumbling from one crisis to another. He confirmed last week that he will no longer pay himself a £100,000 salary from the club. But he denied at the time he was paving the way to leave.

However, Sunday’s unrest might have persuaded him to think again. Justine Mitchell, Thompson’s sister and owner of a 33 per cent stake in the club, resigned from the United board ten days ago. She has yet to give her reasons.
