Stenhousemuir player’s leave of absence in probe into 'wholly inappropriate' comments

Stenhousemuir defender Jonathan Tiffoney is taking “a leave of absence” from the club until the completion of an investigation into an alleged incident at Ochilview last night which brought player wellbeing and mental health once more into the spotlight.

The probe began after an apparent verbal altercation during the League Two match between Stenhousemuir and Albion Rovers, involving Stenny right back Tiffoney, who was playing, and Rovers striker David Cox who was on the bench.

Cox claimed he was verbally abused and mocked over previous problems with mental health, and later announced his retirement from the game after leaving the stadium.

Stenhousemuir issued a statement soon after the match – which Albion Rovers won 1-0 – saying they were aware of an incident and would be looking into claims by both players of serious and wholly inappropriate comments being made.

"While we accept things can get said during a game, we believe the allegations are sufficiently serious enough to merit a more detailed investigation,” said Stenhousemuir. “We will be referring this to the Scottish FA and will work with them, and our colleagues at Albion Rovers, to investigate the incident.”

This afternoon, on their website, Stenhousemuir confirmed they had asked the Scottish FA compliance officer to investigate the incident, while the SPFL had also been informed.

"Serious allegations have been made and they must be fully and robustly investigated,” added the club. “Following discussions with the Stenhousemuir player involved, he will take a leave of absence until the investigation is concluded.”
