Stars of the ’70s: No 1, Drew Busby

BORN in Glasgow in 1947, Drew Busby began his senior career with Third Lanark.

When the Cathkin Park club went out of business in 1967, the striker scored their last-ever goal in a 5-1 defeat by Dumbarton.

For three years, he plied his trade at junior level with Vale of Leven before being plucked by Airdrie, where he formed a successful strike partnership with Drew Jarvie, scoring 43 times in 93 League games.

Wit the Broomfield club heading for relegation, Hearts paid £35,000 to sign Busby, a fee which turned out to be a bargain. His robust style made him an iconic figure at Tynecastle, where he scored 84 goals in six seasons.

Released in 1979, Busby spent two seasons in the NASL with Toronto Blizzard before a brief spell with Morton. After an unsuccessful two years as player-manager at Queen of the South, Busby retired. In recent years he has been the landlord of a pub in Dumbarton.
