St Mirren 2 - 4 Morton: Morton lift Renfrewshire Cup

MORTON lifted the Renfrewshire Cup for the first time since 2005 as they deservedly wrenched the trophy away from St Mirren.

The visitors showed enough to suggest another tilt at promotion isn’t out of the question despite the loss of key players.

When Paul McGowan outstripped Michal Habai before chipping new Morton keeper, Nicolas Caraux, to give Saints the lead midway through the opening half it all looked like a routine win for the SFPL team was on the cards. Morton, though, had very different ideas.

David O’Brien immediately restored parity albeit with a somewhat freakish strike seconds later before Kabba-Modou Cham marked his Morton debut with a predatory strike from close range only to see another new boy, Tomas Peciar, gift Gary Teale an equaliser for Saints right on half-time.

Morton regained their lead seconds after the restart when Reece Hands beat David Cornell in the home goal with a 35-yard strike the custodian will not want to see again.

Bad went to worse for the home team when Cham helped himself to a second after some good approach play from Dougie Imrie.
