Hooper, who has been sidelined for the Owls since late December last year, retweeted a post from a Celtic fan that read: “Sell Moussa, bring back @HOOP588.”

Dembele sealed a €22 million move to French Ligue 1 side Lyon on transfer deadline day, agreeing a five-year deal at the Groupama Stadium.

Despite the Hoops signing Dembele’s countryman Odsonne Edouard for a fee of £9 million earlier this summer, the Scottish champions remain light on attacking options, with Edouard and Leigh Griffiths the only recognised out-and-out strikers.

Hooper’s retweet wasn’t unnoticed by fans of both clubs.

One supporter wrote: “He had his chance to become a Celtic legend, and went for the money”.

Another Celtic fan added: “Thought Hooper did well for us, tried to better himself, didn’t work out. Some fans need to remember these players haven’t supported us their whole life like we have and would do anything to pull the Celtic top on, and have a short career.”

Wednesday fans had their say too, with one supporter writing: “He’s injured mate and has been for several months - we need him more than the Hoops. Sooner he’s back playing for Wednesday the better,” while another tweeted: “Sorry, no chance, going to be banging ‘em in for Wednesday next month.”
