Second division round-up: Cowdenbeath keep flawless home record intact to stay top of table

Second Division leaders Cowdenbeath’s Central Park ground is fast becoming a fortress for Colin Cameron’s men with the home side making it five wins out of five on their home turf by seeing off Forfar 3-1.

All the goals came in the second half with substitute Lewis Coult bringing the game alive with a goal on the hour mark with a fine shot from the edge of the box.

Greg Stewart netted twice in three minutes after great set-up play from Marc McKenzie before Nicky Low grabbed a late consolation for the Loons.

Cowdenbeath manager Colin Cameron said: “I cannot ask any more of the players than they have given me at home this season. We remain at the top and while that brings a different type of pressure we welcome it.”

Forfar, who made the play-offs last season, sit 12 points behind their hosts with Station Park boss Dick Campbell saying: “You can see why they are top of the table as they have good players playing well.”

Bottom of the table Albion Rovers defeated second placed Arbroath 1-0 at Cliftonhill to win only their second three-point haul of the season.

Striker John Gemmell capitalised on some hesitant visiting defending to grab the game’s only goal with Coatbridge boss Paul Martin saying: “My team had become too nice so I made changes that would see us battle and scrap for everything.

“It was crucial that we won and beating a team who have been going well will be great for the players’ confidence.”

Third placed Stenhousemuir came from behind to grab a point in a 1-1 draw with visitors Brechin City, although the home side will be disappointed at not winning after Glebe Park midfielder Bryan Hodge was dismissed ten minutes from half-time.

Charlie King had earlier opened the scoring with a penalty after Hodge was fouled by Willie Lyle, however recent signing Hodge soon saw red for a poor challenge on Eric Paton. Sean Dickson levelled before half time, but no winner was forthcoming despite Stenhousemuir’s numerical advantage.

Dumbarton were another side who failed to punish their opponents’ indiscipline as Airdrie earned a point in a 1-1 draw. Mark Gilhaney gave Dumbarton the lead from a penalty kick and Jamie Stevenson equalised before team-mate Kevin Green was dismissed before the interval.

East Fife continued their move up the table and after beginning October in bottom spot they now sit in fourth place after a 1-0 success over Stirling Albion at Bayview, leapfrogging the visitors in the league table. On-loan Hearts striker Robert Ogleby missed from the penalty spot for the Fifers after he had been fouled in the box, his weak effort saved by Stirling goalkeeper Sam Filler. But Ryan Wallace’s late goal from the edge of the box from a Robert Sloan pass, two minutes from full-time, earned them their third win in a row.

The result sends East Fife down to Ayrshire with a spring in their step as they prepare to face Kilmarnock tomorrow in the quarter-finals of the Scottish Communities League Cup.
