Second Division: Red Lichties denied vital win

Stewart Kean denied Arbroath a confidence-boosting three points ahead of their midweek Scottish Cup replay with Celtic at Gayfield.

Kean struck in the final minute just as Arbroath looked to be safe for a win that would have put them into outright third in the table.

It was a missed opportunity for the home side, with their other
promotion rivals idle.

Stenhousemuir drew first blood when Darren Smith netted his seventh goal of the season with a right-foot shot after being set up by Bryan Hodge after just three minutes.

But Arbroath hit back and Connor Birse carved an opening for Steven Doris and he made no mistake.

Mark Baxter threatened another shortly afterwards but could not keep his shot down.

Stenhousemuir hit back and Scott Morrison was well positioned to stop an Eric Paton free-kick.

Arbroath had more menace about them going forward and player-manager Paul Sheerin was unfortunate not to put them in front when his shot beat Callum Reidford but came back off the post.

Brian Kerr came close for Arbroath at the start of the second half but the midfielder’s shot was too high.

It was no surprise when Stuart Malcolm gave the home side the lead with a left-foot shot six minutes into the second half after Stenhousemuir failed to deal with a Sheerin free-kick.

But Kean had the final word as he beat Morrison after good work from Smith to make it a painful conclusion for Arbroath.
