Scottish third division: Coyne makes up for penalty miss by stunning leaders Annan

East Stirling moved off bottom spot by beating league leaders Annan Athletic 1-0 on Saturday.

Their second win of the season and their first three-point haul since the opening day of the league season four months ago came courtesy of Bradley Coyne’s goal six minutes from half time.

The on-loan St Mirren striker deserves credit for not letting a penalty miss two minutes earlier affect him.

Coyne ran onto a Michael Hunter through ball and gave Craig Summersgill, who had denied him from 12 yards out, no chance.

The second-half saw Annan pin their hosts back and the loss of experienced on-loan Cowdenbeath man Craig Winter to an ankle injury gave the Shire’s defence a very youthful look.

However, they held on, with Bryan Gilfillan missing the best opportunity for a leveller.

Annan still hold the lead over Alloa as the Wasps had to rely on defender Ben Gordon to earn a 1-1 draw against Montrose at Links Park.

The Gable Endies had taken the lead when Scott Johnston dived to head home on 13 minutes, with Gordon nodding in a Ryan McCord corner 12 minutes from time to take a point back to Clackmannanshire.

Elgin and Stranraer finished on the same score after 6ft 9in Paul Millar’s early headed opener for the Borough Briggs’ side and Steven Stirling’s driven second-half leveller for the Blues.

Queen’s Park and Peterhead made it a hat-trick of 1-1 draws that sees the pre-season favourites for promotion from Balmoor slip down to the foot of the table.

Rory McAllister thumped in a header three minutes after the break. The Spiders’ David Murray cancelled that out when he converted a Paul McGinn cross.

Ian Little’s fine run as interim manager of Berwick ended as John Sweeney’s first-half penalty and Liam Cusack’s late goal earned Clyde a 2-0 win.
