Scottish Third Division: Better late than never for league leaders Alloa as they see off Montrose

LEADERS Alloa Athletic left it late to earn a 2-0 win over Montrose.

Stevie May forced Montrose goalkeeper Michael Andrews into an excellent save in the fifth minute but the hosts were disappointing thereafter. It was not until the 87th minute that Alloa broke the deadlock as Ross McKinnon converted Ross McCord’s pass before May added a second in stoppage time.

Stranraer ran out emphatic 5-2 winners despite Mark Nicolson putting Elgin ahead after 13 minutes. Goals from Michael Moore and Craig Malcolm put Stranraer in front.

Nicolson volleyed home an equaliser in the 41st minute but Stephen Stirling’s 53rd-minute penalty restored Stranraer’s lead before further strikes from Scott Taggart and Moore completed the rout.

Annan Athletic’s promotion hopes suffered a blow after being held to a 2-2 draw by East Stirling. The Galabank side opened the scoring after five minutes when David Winters netted from Sean O’Connor’s cross but Scott Maxwell equalised for the visitors seven minutes later. Alex Lurinsky gave East Stirling a 24th-minute lead but Annan salvaged a point courtesy of Jack Steele’s 57th-minute leveller.

Peterhead came from behind to beat Queen’s Park 2-1 at Balmoor.

The visitors took the lead through Sean Burns but Rory McAllister headed Peterhead on level terms in the 62nd minute and the in-form striker notched the winner from the penalty spot five minutes later.
