Scottish football match abandoned after fan dies

A Scottish Championship football match was abandoned on Saturday afternoon after a supporter died during the game.

Play during the fixture between Morton and Queen of the South, at the latter’s Cappielow Park was stopped in the first half as paramedics rushed to attend to the fan, with both teams agreeing to abandon the match some time after.

Morton released a statement following the abandonment, saying that ‘with deep regret’, the match was abandoned ‘due to the tragic death’ of a Morton supporter.

The statement continues: “All at Greenock Morton Football Club would like to take this opportunity to extend our heartfelt sympathy to all family and friends of the gentleman concerned.

“We would further like to register our appreciation for the efforts of the emergency services, St Andrews First Aiders and Stewards who carried out their duties in a professional and caring manner throughout.

“And finally, our thanks must also go to supporters of both teams who showed patience and great respect as events unfolded.
