Scottish Cup round-up: Deveronvale blow away Berwick

Highland League Deveronvale triggered the shock of the second round on Saturday by sending Third Division Berwick Rangers home from Banff stinging from a 4-0 defeat.

The Vale took the lead through Kris Duncan midway through the first half, while defender Scott Fraser added the second just before the half-hour mark.

Chris Blackhall made it three and after Berwick’s Stephen Thomson was sent off. Mike McKenzie netted a penalty to complete the win.

Deveronvale manager Scott Anderson said: “At home, I knew that we could give anyone a game and we certainly proved that.”

Berwick manager Jimmy Crease said: “I will not be offering any excuses.”

The Borderers lasted just as long in the competition as former Hibs and Falkirk midfielder Russell Latapy. The 43-year-old made his debut for Edinburgh City at Meadowbank. However, Ayrshire Junior side Irvine Meadow ended his interest in cup glory with a 1-0 win thanks to David McGeown’s goal in the second half.

In the all Third Division clash, Montrose’s Sean Pierce scored the winner as Clyde were defeated 2-1 at Links Park.John Neil had given the Bully Wee the lead after 19 minutes. However, Paul Lunan restored parity with a goal four minutes after the break.

Alloa and Annan will meet again after substitute Steven Masterton’s goal rescued the Wasps in a 2-2 draw.

Kevin Cawley gave Paul Hartley’s side the lead in 16 minutes. However, goals from David Cox and Peter Watson turned the game on its head before Masterton levelled.

Elgin will face Fraserburgh again next weekend after a goalless draw in the Broch.

However, Stranraer fared much better against non-league opponents as they defeated local rivals Wigtown & Bladnoch 9-0. Among the scorers, Sean Winter hit a hat-trick, while Craig Malcolm and Martin Grehan scored doubles.

Peterhead also progressed, with Martin Bavidge scoring twice in the 2-0 win over Nairn County.

Queen’s Park saw off hosts Huntly 3-0, with Jamie Longworth scoring before the break and Sean Burns and Craig Smith netting afterwards.

Cammy Keith’s penalty earned Keith a 1-0 win at Wick Academy.

Highland League rivals Clachnacuddin and Inverurie Locos will meet again after a 1-1 draw in Inverness, with Mark Dougall netting for Clach and John Maitland levelling.

There was a triple success for East of Scotland League sides as Spartans, Gala Fairydean and Vale of Leithen won through to Wednesday’s third round draw.

Spartans ended the interest of North Region Junior side Culter with a 2-0 success at Crombie Park. The game went the Edinburgh side’s way after home defender Ross Crosbie was sent off when he gave away a penalty midway through the first half.

Gavin Malin hit home the spot kick, and Jordan Finnie rifled in a cut-back to seal the win seven minutes from time.

Golspie Sutherland’s trip south proved to be fruitless, as schoolboy Jack Hay inspired Gala to a 5-2 win by netting his second hat-trick in this season’s Scottish Cup.

The 17-year-old bagged a treble in the first round as Hawick Royal Albert were beaten 8-1. On Saturday, he had Gala two in front before Shaun Kerr pulled a goal back for the amateur side.

Craig Livingstone scored twice to ensure Gala were in control and, a minute after Gavin Nicholson had notched Golspie’s second, Hay grabbed another goal to claim his second match ball in the cup.

Vale of Leithen looked to have blown a winning position against Cove Rangers when Kevin Webster netted a late equaliser for the Highland League side. However, on-loan Cowdenbeath youngster John Ferguson netted five minutes into injury time for a 3-2 success.

Scott Moffat and Jordan Hall had Vale two up after 40 minutes, only for Richie Singer’s goal just before half-time to give Cove hope and it looked like a replay would be required when Webster scored.

Two other Junior sides joined Irvine Meadow in round three, with Auchinleck Talbot comfortably defeating Threave Rovers 8-1. Steven White opened the floodgates, with goalkeeper Andy Leishman adding a second when his huge kicked clearance bounced over visiting goalkeeper Vinnie Parker.

Colin Spence made it three before Danny Dunlinson grabbed a goal back.

Mick McCann, Gordon Pope all scored before David Gillies netted a brace and Bryan Young rounded things off. Dunlinson’s day ended with a red card.

Bo’ness had a 2-1 success over Whitehill Welfare, with Stephen Tarditi scoring in each half.

The Newtown Park side survived a rally from Whitehill, after Andrew Kidd scored a penalty 13 minutes from time.

In the replays next Saturday, Inverurie v Clach kicks off at 2pm, while the Annan v Alloa, and Elgin v Fraserburgh games start at 3pm.
