Neil Doncaster: SPFL could play matches abroad

A story emerged last month that Dundee and Celtic were in talks over a proposal to move a league fixture between the two sides to the United States.

The switch has yet to be agreed upon by both clubs, and even if it is they will need permission from the SPFL and Fifa to move a competitive match out of the country.

However, it would appear the idea has the backing of the league chief executive, who feels it’s only right that Scottish football should explore any demand outwith its borders.

Speaking to BBC Scotland, Doncaster said: “We owe it to everyone involved to look at what’s possible and work through the ramifications.”

“Certainly if we’re talking about innovation, that is exciting innovation.

“I think there are all sorts of considerations that have to be worked through. The Premier League had similar plans south of the border a few years ago which ultimately came to nothing, but there is a demand there to explore it.

“Let’s not have a closed mind to anything. Let’s see how it could be part of an exciting new future for the game.”
