Rodgers acknowledged a deal for the player was close at his press conference on Friday.

“There’s no smoke without fire and there’s been a lot of smoke,” the Celtic manager said.

“Scott’s a player I know well. I’d hope to sign a player before the weekend.”

Celtic open the defence of their league title against Hearts at Tynecastle on Sunday.

Later this month they face the Israeli side Hapoel Beer Sheva in the play-off round of the Champions League.
