Scotland’s one-club men: Frank Beattie (Kilmarnock)

THE only man to lead Kilmarnock to a Scottish League title, Beattie gave 19 years service to the Rugby Park club and was the first man to play more than 600 first-team games for the Ayrshire outfit.

Signed by Malky McDonald from Bonnybridge Juniors in 1953, Beattie made his debut against St Mirren in a League Cup tie the following year as an inside forward. However, he later switched position to wing half under Willie Waddell and excelled in this role, helping the club enjoy a golden era.

In season 1964-65 Beattie led Killie to the First Division title and then captained his team into the European Cup, eventually losing to Real Madrid over two legs. In season 1966-67, under his captaincy, they reached the semi-final of the Fairs Cup before losing to Leeds.

His final appearance came at Motherwell in September 1971 before he retired at the age of 38 and departed Killie as the club’s longest-serving post-war player.
