Scotland V Serbia: Subotic seeks 6-1 Wales repeat

BORUSSIA Dortmund’s Neven Subotic has already helped Serbia thrash Wales 6-1 in Novi Sad and reckons Scotland could be next.

The Serbian defender had no answer to bitter Balkan rivals Croatia on Friday night in Zagreb as his side went down with barely a murmur. Serbia froze in the first-half in particular, but did at least improve slightly in the second-half and missed two good chances.

Bundesliga star Subotic admits both Serbia and Scotland’s World Cups are over and the nations will be playing for only pride tonight. He believes the many off-the-park distractions against Croatia hampered them, but he saw signs of a Serbian recovery ahead of facing the Scots. Subotic admitted: “When we played in Novi Sad against Wales we had a terrific result so maybe we like playing against British teams – I hope that continues. Against the Welsh everything went right. Up till then we’d struggled to score goals and we hadn’t been playing that well.

“But when we played them everything came together perfectly – we scored an early goal and went from there. We’re playing in the same stadium so hopefully that will be an omen for the game. The chances for us and Scotland to make the finals are tiny, real slight. Especially for us after we lost in Croatia. It’s nearly impossible for both of us. We need a couple of miracles and the likes of Belgium and Croatia to collapse, which neither of them have looked like they’re going to do.

“They’d both need to lose two or three of their remaining games for us to have any chance. I can’t see that happening. That’s real wishful thinking. But as long as there’s a chance we’re going to fight for it.

“We lost in Zagreb so we want to show our fans the positive side of Serbian football. We played well in the second-half and we want to take that form into the Scotland match.”
