Scotland Under-21 girls score goals galore

In a hectic Easter week, the tartan girls enjoyed a trip to Jersey and trounced the local opposition not once, but twice. The first match was won 11-0 and the follow-up was an even more impressive 12-0.

Back home, the next warm-up match was against the Central Academy at a sunny Grangemouth Stadium.

Facing an older and more experienced side, this was a much closer contest.

But first-half goals by Inverkeithing High’s Morgan Cross and another by Mary Erskine’s Georgia Adderley – who also plays squash for Scotland – secured a fine win.

Both sides looked keen to impress the sizeable crowd in the main stand at Grangemouth.

The early exchanges showed that both teams were going to be well matched.

The school side took a little time to settle, but it was in the eighth minute that the deadlock was broken.

Leah Eddie delivered a pinpoint accurate ball into the penalty area and Cross headed the ball over the outstretched arms of the Academy goalkeeper.

The Central girls came back strongly and were unlucky not to be on level terms as the Scots failed to clear their lines from a corner. It took a strong challenge by Tara McGonigle and a positive clearance by Adderley to stop the onslaught.

Scotland’s midfield began to get on top and came close to adding to their tally. The second goal came from a corner by Kirstie McIntosh.

The ball broke to the classy Adderley and she twisted and turned before powering home Scotland’s second goal.

That was the end of the scoring, and the international squad have one more outing against Hibs at Meggetland in Edinburgh before heading to Wales to take on the best of Britain in the Bob Docherty Trophy.

Congratulations to the High School of Glasgow on capturing the Scottish Independent Schools Football Association Under-18s seven-a-side tournament.

Remarkably, they completed the tournament without conceding a goal.

The team had three impressive wins to take the SISA trophy. The closest match was against 1- 0 against George Watson’s College, with captain Oli Crawford scoring the only goal.

Against Strathallan School, a hat-trick by Mairi Crooks secured a 3-0 win, followed by a 6 - 0 victory over Greenfaulds High School. Oli and Sammy Bell both produced doubles and Georgia Crooks and Christina Miller also made it on to the score sheet.

Twin sisters Mairi and Georgia Crooks, aged 14 and in second year, were selected last year for the Scottish Independent Schools Under16 football team and have this year they have also signed up for the Celtic Women team.
