Sam Cosgrove reveals 'no-brainer' decision as Aberdeen striker completes Birmingham City move

The 24-year-old has moved for an undisclosed fee – reported to be in the region of £2m – having agreed a three-and-a-half-year contract with the English Championship side.

Cosgrove, who joined the Dons from Carlisle United for £30,000 in 2018, made 103 appearances for the Pittodrie club, scoring 47 goals.

Speaking to his new club’s website, the Englishman said: "It feels really good to be here. As soon as the interest was there from Birmingham it was a no brainer from me and I'm really delighted to get it over the line.

"There's a big job for me to do here. I'm looking forward to playing in the Championship. I know how demanding it is but I wouldn't be here if I didn't think I was ready to take on the challenge. Short-term, it's helping the team. Long-term it's echoing that - being as successful as I can and helping this fantastic club."

Aberdeen said the deal was a “significant” one for the club, adding that it “underlines our commitment to developing our young talented assets, further facilitating our continued investment in the first team and youth academy”.

Dons boss Derek McInnes added: “We wish Sam well. He’s been a good servant to us, but we felt it was the right time for him to move on, on the back of the offer we received, and with eighteen months left on his contract.

“The improvement in Sam since he arrived is clear for all to see and I’ve no doubt he will go on and do well at Birmingham. We have benefited greatly from his goals and overall contribution to the team and we wish him all the best in the future.”

Aberdeen are set to move quickly to bring in a replacement with the club reportedly on the verge of signing Scotland Under-21 striker Fraser Hornby on loan from French side Stade de Reims for the rest of the season.

The youngster has struggled for first team action since making the move from Everton in the summer, managing just three substitute appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit.
