Saints close in on Doris and Swansea’s Cornell

St Mirren manager Danny Lennon is closing in on two new signings.

Lennon hopes to agree a one-year loan deal for Swansea goalkeeper David Cornell. The 22-year-old Welsh under-21 international is highly rated by the Barclays Premier League side and could be sent north to Paisley to continue his development.

Saints are also close to securing an agreement with out-of-contract Arbroath midfielder Steven Doris and hope to seal a two-year deal early next week.

Lennon requires a new goalkeeper after losing last season’s Scottish Communities League Cup-winning stopper Craig Samson to Kilmarnock while understudies Grant Adam and Chris Smith have also left the club.

A new back-up keeper is also on Lennon’s wish list and the Paisley side hope to confirm another new face as soon as Monday.

Meanwhile, Doris, who can operate in midfield or attack, is now close to agreeing a free transfer to Saints. The 24-year-old former St Johnstone player has twice been nominated for the PFA Scotland Second Division player of the year award, but missed out on landing this season’s prize to Nicky Clark, the former Queen of the South striker, now at Rangers.
