St Johsntone win the Scottish cup

Saint Johnstone have waited 130 years for the chance to win this cup and yesterday they grabbed it with both hands, beating Dundee United 2 - 0 in a hard fought encounter. Steven Anderson and Steven MacLean scored the goals that allowed the saints to lift the Scottish cup for the first time in their history. Manager Tommy Wright was delighted, he said: “It’s a football fairy tale that is the beauty of the Scottish cup. The FA cup in England has lost its magic but I don’t think the Scottish cup has. That is why, when everyone was wanting Dundee United and Aberdeen in the final I didn’t. I thought the real story was us and that proved to be the case. To get the Scottish cup, our first major trophy, words can’t describe how I feel.” (Various)

Sutton goes bust

Celtic hero Chris Sutton has filed for bankruptcy after accruing massive debts, the former Celtic striker, 41, apparently owes more than £300,000. The problems began when the star and his wife were stung by crooked accountant Simon Grinter who talked them both into investing £50,000 before Grinter was exposed as a fraud and later jailed. It is thought the majority of the debts belong to his investment company the Chris Sutton consultancy. It is a harsh turn around for the star who was once Britain’s first £10,000 a week football star. (Sun)

Locke set for coaching role at Kilmarnock

Gary Locke could be set for a quick fire return to coaching with his old football team Kilmarnock after receiving an offer from former team mate Allan Johnston to join his back room staff. The former Hearts manager who lost his job this week will consider the offer and a decision will be made this week. Locke ironically received the manager of the month award 48 hours after he had been sacked by Hearts. (Express)

McLean set for England

St Mirren midfielder Kenny McLean who was named SPFL Player of the Month for April, is out of contract in the summer and is keen to test himself in England. The 22 year-old, is adamant he will only move if the offer is right and that he wants guaranteed first team football. He said: “I’m young so it’s not all about money just now. Obviously it is a short career, but I need to be playing at my age. If I go down for money I could be back up in a year or two.”

McLean has been offered a new contract by St Mirren but says he won’t be rushed into making a decision. (Express)

Scotland Coach Gemmill dares his players to win

Scotland under-17 head coach Scot Gemmill has dared his players to dream about winning the UEFA European Championships. He then revealed his own lofty ambitions to win the Champion’s League as a club manager within ten years. His team take on Holland in the semi final in the Maltese national stadium tonight and Gemmill believes they can win. He said: “ I hope some of our players are thinking ‘it could be me’ and I encourage them to think like that.” (Sunday Mail)

Millar believes McGovern is second best

The second best goal keeper in the country doesn’t even play in the Premiership says Mark Millar, but he believes it’s only a matter of time before he, and Falkirk, are playing at the top level. Mark millar believes Falkirk keeper Michael McGovern is their secret weapon in their bid to beat Hamilton Accies today and see them through to a play off final against Hibernian. He said: “Other than Fraser Forster, I think Mikey is the best goalie in the country. He has been terrific in the time I’ve been at Falkirk, different class.” (Mail on Sunday)
