Rangers make move for former Man City starlet Reece Wabara
Rangers are in discussions with former Manchester City development team captain Reece Wabara as Mark Warburton continues rebuilding the squad he has inherited at Ibrox.
The right-back, a member of England’s pool at the FIFA Under-20 World Cup in 2011, recently left Doncaster Rovers after they failed to win promotion to the Sky Bet Championship.
Wabara travelled to Glasgow for talks over the weekend and it is understood he will train with the club at Murray Park this week with a view to signing a contract. (Sky Sports)
Genk tell Jelle Vossen to ‘make his mind up’
GENK have offered the striker a new contract and have ordered him to make up his mind by the end of today.
The Belgian outfit are fighting to ward off interest from Parkhead and from England for their talented Belgium striker. Vossen, who spent last term on loan at Middlesbrough, has stated he is keen to return to the UK.
But Genk have prepared an improved and extended contract in an attempt to sway his decision.
Genk Technical Director De Conde admitted: “We’re really pulling out all the stops to hold Jelle in Genk.” (Daily Record)
Kris Boyd to make Kilmarnock return
Kris Boyd is set to return to Kilmarnock for a third stint after leaving Rangers this summer. The Striker is set to sign a two-year deal as he becomes Killie manager Gary Locke’s fourth signing of the summer transfer window.
The 31-year-old’s return to Ibrox didn’t pan out as well as he hoped as he only managed to return 10 goals in 43 games, a low haul by the striker’s high standards. (STV)
Killie are also said to be keen on Boyd’s former team mate Lee McCulloch and hope the pair can be team up again this season. (Various)
Adam Matthews confident Celtic can return to Champions League group stages
Adam Matthews today predicted Celtic’s run in the Europa League last season will help the their bid to qualify for the Champions League group stages.
And after pushing Italian cracks Inter Milan all the way in the knockout rounds, the Welsh right back believes they can do well if they do progress.
“I think we can take confidence from how we performed in the Europa League in general last season and the last two games against Inter Milan in particular,” said Matthews.
“I think we have learned from our games in the Europa League and will be well placed going into our European games now.” (Evening Times)
Adam Rooney on target for Aberdeen yet again
Adam Rooney scored his fourth goal of the week as Aberdeen defeated Scottish Premiership rivals St Johnstone 1-0 in a friendly at Brechin’s Glebe Park.
Rooney netted a hat-trick, which included two penalties, at the same venue on Wednesday as the Dons beat Brechin 8-2 and the Irish striker was on target again with a spot-kick yesterday. (Scotsman)
Winter break set to be reinstated in Scotland
Scottish football chiefs are exploring the possibility of reinstating a winter break, with insiders suggesting that it could be pushed through in time for the 2016-17 Premiership season.
The move comes as the season becomes more and more elongated and follows a summer in which many players have managed only a couple of weeks off due to club and international commitments. (Scotsman)
Liverpool goalkeeper Danny Ward targets Aberdeen No 1 spot after arriving on loan
Fresh from keeping a clean sheet in his Aberdeen debut against St Johnstone on Sunday, on-loan Dons goalkeeper Danny Ward declared himself ready to take possession of the No 1 jersey at Pittodrie at the earliest possible opportunity.
The Wrexham-born keeper didn’t have an awful lot to do in the Glebe Park sunshine after being thrown on at the interval but there were signs that Derek McInnes has picked up an asset worthy of the impressive CV. (Daily Mail)
