Petition to get ‘Hibsed’ added to dictionary

Football fans, believed to be of a maroon persuasion, have started a petition on Change.org calling for the term ‘Hibsed’ to be added to the Oxford English Dictionary.

The petition defines the potential word in question as “to be ahead in your pursuit of something, only to mess it up before you cross the finish line”.

There are similar terms in English football, most notably “doing a Spurs”, that mean mostly the same thing.

The petition has, at the time of writing, attracted 900 signatures and was created by user Rudolf Skacel. (change.org)

‘Devastated’ Cummings admits final loss is worst of career

Hibs forward Jason Cummings has admitted that the weekend’s League Cup Final loss to Ross County is “probably the worst I have felt after a game in my life.”

He said: “I thought we had more chances and I felt we were the better team – just edged it. We’ve got to look at the positives. If we didn’t look at the positives then I would end up jumping off a bridge – I’m that gutted. I can’t express how bad it is.”

Fontaine tweets statement after cup loss

HIBS defender Liam Fontaine, who scored the Easter Road side’s equaliser but ultimately helped Alex Schalk to grab Ross County’s winner has tweeted a statement the morning after the cup final.

The big stopper said on Twitter: “Nobody is as gutted today as myself, but all I can do, as you have to in sport, is deal with it and move on quickly.

“I made a mistake at the wrong time and ultimately killed mine and my teammates’ dream of lifting the cup on the day, for a club I love playing for.”

The former Bristol City centre half added that he ‘gave everything to try and win’ - and had an acrobatic effort superbly saved by County ‘keeper Gary Woods.

Craig Gordon: Griffiths as good as Darren Bent

Celtic’s goalkeeper has praised 25 year-old striker Leigh Griffiths after Saturday’s 2-1 win over Partick Thistle, by equating his talent to that of ex-Sunderland striker Darren Bent.

The £1 million signing scored his 35th goal of the season at the weekend, prompting Gordon’s comparison. “I would say they [Bent and Griffiths] are similar in terms of finishing ability. Leigh actually plays a similar type of game, always looking to get in behind.

“Leigh maybe comes short and can score from longer range more than Darren Bent did but in terms of goal scorers they’re both phenomenal.” (Daily Record)

Logan admits Aberdeen must win earlier

During his 100th game for Aberdeen, defender Shay Logan scored a 71st-minute diving header to dismiss Kilmarnock 2-1 at Pittodrie over the weekend.

Logan said: “At 1-0 a team is still in it and they were fighting for a different cause. We are fighting to go top and they are fighting to stay up so there are different pressures but we need to put teams to bed a little earlier because it is getting a bit frantic at the end of games.” (The Scotsman)

Schalk ‘can’t remember’ anything about Cup Final goal

ROSS County striker Alex Schalk gave the Staggies their first major silverware in the club’s history with his injury-time winner against Hibs at Hampden - but can’t remember much about his finish.

The Dutchman scored with just seconds left to play, before taking his top off and running to the County fans in celebration.

“Scoring the goal is all a blank — I went straight to the fans, of course. It’s unbelievable for them. I saw all the fans running down to the hoardings and trying to hug me and grab me over the boards”, he said.

“There can’t be a better moment to get the match-winning goal.” (Various)

Motherwell’s Pearson out for six weeks

Stephen Pearson has been ruled out of action for six weeks with several broken ribs and a punctured lung, following Well’s 2-1 win over Dundee United on Friday night.

The 33 year-old landed awkwardly after a challenge and has been told by doctors that he will be out of commission until the end of April. Captain Keith Lasley and defender Josh Law were also injured in the game. (Scottish Sun)

McGregor feared end to Celtic career

Midfielder Callum McGregor has admitted he feared for his career following his arrest for drunk driving last month. The 22 year-old was given a £500 fine and banned from driving for 12 months, and was left out of five games by manager Ronny Deila.

The player said: “I thought that might be it for me in terms of my Celtic career, [but] the manager came and put an arm around me and told me that I had to have a think and then try to lift myself.

“I am so grateful that I have been handed another chance and I am desperate to take it.” (Evening Times)

Hughes: Inverness aren’t giving up top six aim

Inverness manager John Hughes insists his side can still mount a push for a top-six spot, despite suffering a third straight Ladbrokes Premiership defeat at the hands of Hamilton over the weekend.

Hughes said: “If we want to get where we want to go we need to go on a run. Get the ball over the line, keep clean sheets and it wouldn’t surprise me with these bunch of lads if we do that.” (The Scotsman)
