Roy Hodgson quits after defeat by Iceland

Roy Hodgson resigned as England manager after his team were embarrassingly dumped out of the European Championships by lowly Iceland

The smallest nation ever to play in the tournament came from behind to defeat Hodgson’s side 2-1 in their last-16 clash in Nice.

Minutes after the defeat, Hodgson announced the end of his four-year reign.

He said: “I would have loved to stay on another two years. However, I’m pragmatic and know that we’re in the results
business.”

He added: “Now is the time for someone else to oversee the progress of this young, hungry and extremely talented group of players.

“They have been fantastic and they have done everything that has been asked of them.”

England had led after only four minutes via a Wayne Rooney penalty but were caught cold just two minutes laterwhen Ragnar Sigurdsson equalised.

England goalkeeper Joe Hart then allowed Kolbeinn Sigthorsson’s less-than-powerful shot from the edge of the penalty area to squirm from his grasp and over the line.
