Roundabout rename call after St Johnstone cup win

ONE OF THE busiest roundabouts in Scotland could be renamed in honour of St Johnstone’s historic Scottish Cup win.

Polititicans have put forward proposals to give Broxden Roundabout, on the outskirts of Perth, a new name following the city’s football club’s victory on Saturday.

It would be an everlasting tribute to Tommy Wright’s men, who recorded a 2-0 score over Tayside rivals Dundee United.

Perth city south councillor Willie Wilson said the move was worth “serious consideration”.

Additional suggestions have included naming a new street near McDiarmid Park in honour of the club.

Other Perth and Kinross councillors have given their backing to commemorating the win in a tangible form.

Alexander Stewart said he had begun discussions with Provost Liz Grant and council leader Ian Miller.

He said today: “We should be trying to do something for St Johnstone.

“We should commemorate it in some way so there is a lasting legacy.

“St Johnstone won the cup for the first time in their 130-year history, which is a great achievement.

“Perth has not generally been perceived as a footballing city in the past.”

The junction was originally named after a farm on the site and a nearby valley is still known as Broxden.

It is thought the name could be a corruption of Brock’s den, denoting it was the location of a badger sett.
