Ronaldo fires Real into last 16

Real Madrid joined domestic rivals Barcelona in guaranteeing their qualification for the Champions League knockout stages as two Cristiano Ronaldo goals gave Jose Mourinho’s men a 2-0 victory at Lyon.

Ronaldo scored a goal in each half to secure a win which, coupled with Group F rivals Ajax’s 4-0 hammering of Dinamo Zagreb, maintains their five-point lead in the group and ensures their progression. Ajax crushed the Croatians with goals from Gregory van der Wiel, Miralem Sulejmani, Siem de Jong and Nicolas Lodeiro.

Mario Gomez fired a first-half hat-trick as Bayern Munich strengthened their grip on Group A, but only after withstanding a brave late fightback by Napoli. Gomez struck in the 17th, 23rd and 42nd minutes to put the group leaders well in command in Germany.

But Federico Fernandez pulled one back before the break and, after Napoli’s Camilo Zuniga and Bayern’s Holger Badstuber were both harshly sent off for two bookable offences, Fernandez hit his second to make the final score 3-2.

Inter Milan made light of their continued travails in Serie A with a 2-1 win over Lille which helped move Claudio Ranieri’s men five points clear of their nearest rivals in Group B. Walter Samuel opened the scoring in the 18th minute and Diego Milito added a second in the 65th, before an 83rd-minute strike from Tulio de Melo gave Lille a glimmer of hope.

Trabzonspor and CSKA Moscow were forced to settle for a goalless draw in Turkey.

In Manchester United’s group, Benfica were held to a 1-1 draw by Basle in Lisbon, which saw the Portuguese side replaced at the top on goal difference by Sir Alex Ferguson’s side. Benfica knew a win would almost certainly be enough to secure qualification.

But despite Rodrigo’s fourth-minute opener, Basle grabbed a point when Benjamin Huggel equalised on 64.
