The brother of Dutch international Wesley Sneijder signed for United during pre-season after impressing during the club’s tour to the Netherlands.

However, a few days after coming on as a substitute in the opening day loss to Aberdeen he was admitted to Ninewells hospital suffering from what the club described as “a virus”.

He returned to his homeland a few days later.

A statement released by United on Tuesday confirmed his departure.

It said: “Dundee United can confirm that Rodney Sneijder’s contract with the club has been terminated by mutual agreement. Everyone at Dundee United wishes Rodney all the very best for the future.”

Manager Jackie McNamara said: “This is the best solution for Rodney first and foremost. We have a responsibility to protect the player’s health moving forward and respect his current situation.”

United said they will replace any replica shirt which has been purchased from their Dundee United Direct club shop and customised with the player’s name and number.
