Riddel sure Selkirk pitch will suit Leith

Leith Athletic boss Derek Riddel is determined to lead his team straight back into the Central Taxis Premier Division after their relegation last
season, and he is encouraged by early form.

Leith travelled to play Easthouses Lily in their opening First Division game and returned with a very creditable 4-1 victory and Riddel said: “To go to Easthouses and get all three points was excellent.

“Dave [McQueenie] and John [Hunter] have Easthouses very well organised and we had to work hard to close them down.

“We are obviously disappointed that we find ourselves back in the First Division after only one season in the Premier although I am confident that we definitely have the players to get us back up.”

Tomorrow, Leith visit Selkirk, who were relegated along with themselves, and who last Saturday recorded an encouraging 2-0 away win against
Glasgow University in the
Scottish Cup.

“In the Premier Division last season we beat Selkirk 1-0 and drew 1-1 with them,” said
Riddel.

“They are a tough outfit but we are playing well and on Selkirk’s excellent pitch we will be able to get the ball down and pass it.

“We are scoring goals and also defending better than we did last season.”

In the summer, Riddel lost the services of Jack Combe who has gone to the United States on a scholarship, while
Willie Bremner signed for
Spartans.

“We have brought in Steven Radzynski and Kyle Boggie, while Greig Tulloch and Lewis Cairns have really stepped up their games,” added Riddel.

“Everything is going well and we hope to build on that with a result against Selkirk. We’ve had a reasonably good start to the season so far.”

The game kicks-off at Yarrow Park at 2.30pm.

Leith also have the opportunity of qualifying for the
quarter-final stages of the East of Scotland League Cup where a win by four clear goals against
Peebles Rovers would see them progress.
