Rangers manager Steven Gerrard says his runaway Premiership leaders will continue to pay attention to any surge in form by reigning champions Celtic in the closing stretch of the title race.

Gerrard’s men are 18 points clear at the top of the table ahead of their game against Kilmarnock at Ibrox on Saturday and need a maximum of 16 more points from their remaining 10 fixtures to claim the domestic crown for the first time in a decade.

Celtic’s 4-0 victory at St Mirren in midweek saw them rack up three straight league wins for the first time since December and Gerrard remains determined to guard against any complacency within his squad after they dropped points for only the fourth time this season in the 1-1 draw at Hamilton last weekend.

“I wouldn’t say it’s a warning but I think we’ve always got to be respectful of the challenge,” said Gerrard.

“You always have to keep checking your wing mirrors. But it’s very much about us at Rangers and where we’re at.

“The players have been incredible up to this point, they have shown a fantastic level of consistency.

“We have dropped four points since September, which is a phenomenal bit of form. So it’s a case of keeping the players hungry and consistent, making them realise this is not done and that it won’t be done until it’s officially done.

“We won’t get carried away, we will always be respectful and realise the challenge and what other teams are capable of.

“Players are human and will have emotions and feelings. There is nothing wrong with being excited but it is also a time for staying humble and realising the difficult challenges ahead. It’s about just being prepared for the next challenge to come our way.

“But we’re not robots. We understand we have a healthy lead and understand we have ten games to go. We’re not painting a picture that we’re stupid here and don’t understand where we are.

“Having said that, we’ll never get carried away. We have to go and earn it and grab it. To do that, we have to be patient and take the challenges as they come.”
