Gerrard’s squad are currently on a run of 15 consecutive wins in the Scottish Premiership after the 2-1 success over Aberdeen at Pittodrie which strengthened their commanding position at the top of the table.

The post-war record for successive victories in the top flight by a Rangers team is 16, set under the guidance of Jock Wallace in his first season as manager in 1972-73.

Wallace had stepped up from the role of first team coach to replace Willie Waddell as boss in the aftermath of Rangers’ European Cup Winners’ Cup triumph in Barcelona at the end of the previous campaign.

The run of victories in the old First Division began with a 4-0 drubbing of East Fife at Bayview on December 23, 1972 and encompassed a 2-1 win over Celtic which raised hopes of beating their then all-conquering Old Firm rivals to the championship.

But while Rangers did remain unbeaten for the rest of the league campaign, the sequence of wins was ended in a 2-2 draw at Aberdeen in their penultimate fixture and they finished a point behind Celtic in the final table as Jock Stein’s squad made it eight titles in a row.

Wallace had to settle for a Scottish Cup triumph, the first of 10 major honours he won over two spells as Rangers manager.

Gerrard now appears firmly on course to land silverware for the first time in his third season in the job with Rangers still undefeated in the 2020-21 Premiership.

The streak of wins they are on at the moment began on their first visit to Fir Park in September when they thumped Motherwell 5-1 and they must be strongly fancied to match and then surpass the post-war club record.

They are still some way short of the all-time Rangers record of 22 consecutive top flight league wins. That was achieved by the remarkable side of 1898-99 which won all 18 league games that season and then the first four of the following campaign.
