Ryan Hedges believes Aberdeen can boogie their way to victory over Rangers at Ibrox

As they attempt to bring Rangers’ unbeaten start to the season to an end on Sunday afternoon, Ryan Hedges insists he and his Aberdeen team-mates can take inspiration from Andrew Considine’s Scotland heroics.

Veteran defender Considine placed an indelible mark on his country’s celebrations of winning a place at the Euro 2020 finals when he prompted the raucous dressing-room rendition of 1970s disco classic Yes Sir, I Can Boogie after the penalty shoot-out play-off defeat of Serbia in Belgrade.

Considine first adopted the song by Spanish female vocal duo Baccara for his stag party in 2015 when a video of him dancing to it while dressed in drag entered the public domain.

Hedges, who joined Aberdeen last year, was vaguely familiar with the back story but now believes Considine has established a permanent link with an anthem he hopes will be played at full volume at Ibrox.

“The stuff from Andy’s stag do had been brought up a couple of times in the squad’s group chat since I came to Aberdeen - but not to the extent it has since the game in Serbia!,” said Hedges.

“I think if we win at Ibrox on Sunday, then Yes Sir, I Can Boogie will be blasting through the away dressing room.

“All publicity is good publicity for Andy. Hopefully the song might make him into a bit of a cult hero. He could be like Will Grigg of Northern Ireland with that song at the Euros back in 2016, you never know.

“Andy’s played three games for Scotland now and kept a clean sheet in two of them. It’s an incredible feat and one which, six months ago, he probably didn’t think would ever happen for him. It’s fully deserved.”

Welsh international Hedges is hoping to reclaim a place in his country’s squad for next summer’s European Championship finals and takes heart from Considine’s unlikely late breakthrough onto the international scene.

“Hopefully that chance will come around for me with Wales as well in the next round of games in March,” added Hedges. “I think I’ve been okay in the games I have played for Wales.

"If I can keep playing and giving my all for Aberdeen, keep affecting games, getting goals and assists, and the team's winning, there's no reason why not. As long as I can look myself in the mirror and say I have done all I can, then if I'm not picked it's not on me.”

Aberdeen have won three and drawn one of their last six visits to Ibrox and will need to find another memorable display to place the first dent in Rangers’ exceptional home record in the Premiership so far this season which has seen Steven Gerrard’s men win all seven matches without conceding a goal.

"That more recent record in Glasgow gives you a bit of confidence that if you do a lot of things right in the game then you can get results, despite the quality of the opposition,” said manager Derek McInnes.

“You have to be fully concentrated. Players need to take real responsibility when you play against good sides. We understand Rangers are a possession-based team and no doubt they will have the majority of possession again on Sunday. But the approach is to set up to win the game.”
