Relaxed Glen Kamara lifts lid on Rangers contract talks

Rangers manager Steven Gerrard has made no secret recently about how highly he rates Glen Kamara, insisting the midfielder could play ‘for most teams at any level’ and urging his club’s board to reward the Finnish international’s fine form with an improved contract.

There’s no doubt it is a mutual appreciation society as far as Kamara is concerned. The 25-year-old has revealed his gratitude to Gerrard for the trust he has placed in him and credits the former Liverpool and England captain for instilling in him the confidence to raise the standard of his game with both club and country.

Kamara, a stand-out performer again as Rangers beat Lech Poznan 1-0 at Ibrox on Thursday to maintain their unbeaten start to the season in all competitions, is relaxed about his contract situation and unaware of any progress being made towards a new deal.

“It’s definitely nice to hear that the manager wants a new contract for me,” said Kamara whose existing deal runs until the summer of 2023.

“He’s a big manager and I’m always delighted to have that kind of praise from him. But I’m focused on my football and whatever happens from there (in terms of a contract) will happen.

“I’m just focused on playing for Rangers and doing well for the team. Hopefully I can carry on doing well.

“The manager has been really helpful to me. He’s just told me to go out there, be confident and play my game. He has really given me that belief to go out there and do well.

“I feel confident, I feel good. I just feel like I’m playing at a good level right now and hopefully I can continue getting better. I guess the more games you play, you get more confident and you get more accustomed to everyone around you. I’m excited to be here and hopefully I can just carry it on.

“Playing in Europe is definitely improving me. It’s just like at international level, you are playing against different opponents. It’s always nice to play in Europe. I’m always excited to play in it. It’s a good competition to really test yourself."
