Steven Gerrard's confirmed Rangers team for UEFA Europa League match v Royal Antwerp with playmakers Hagi and Kent on bench

Steven Gerrard has named his starting team to play Royal Antwerp in tonight’s much anticipated knock-out stage first leg tie in Belgium.

The Rangers boss has selected his side for the club’s second consecutive year in the knockout phase of the competition.

Last year Rangers saw off Braga at this stage and hero of the hour Ianis Hagi is on the bench – alongside Ryan Jack, Leon Balogun and, perhaps surprisingly, regular starter Ryan Kent.

The boss has insisted the covid-19 protocol breaches by five players earlier this week will not derail the focus of the squad for the game – and Gerrard has praised the high standard of training on show this week leading up to the team’s trip to Belgium last night.

A win for Steven Gerrard would take him to 23 European victories as Rangers manager – one ahead of Dick Advocaat and match club legend Walter Smith’s tally of continental coups.

Kemar Roofe is back on familiar territory having played for Anderlecht last season and then returned to the Lowlands to fire an incredible goal against Standard Liege from his own half. He will face his former Anderlecht boss Franky Vercauteren who has led the Great Old side up five places in the Belgian Jupiler League.

All eyes will be on the Bosuilstadion for tonight’s encounter between the Scottish Premiership leaders and the Belgian second-placed side with the return leg at Ibrox next week.
