The Colombian was booked by referee Steven MacLean for jumping into defender Mark Connolly. Morelos appeared to make contact with the United defender with his forearm.

The incident has been fast tracked with a hearing to be held this Thursday.

The notice of complaint was due to ‘Disciplinary Rule 200’ allegedly being breached.

It reads: “Where any one of the sending off offences of (A1) serious foul play, (A2) violent conduct, and (A3) spitting at an opponent or any other person is committed by a player at a match, but that sending off offence was not seen by any of the match officials at the time that it was committed, the mandatory suspension for that sending off offence as provided for in Annex C of the Judicial Panel Protocol shall be applied to the player.”

Morelos’ actions were branded “crazy" by Rangers legend Ally McCoist, while United manager Micky Mellon opted against airing his views after the match.

Steven Gerrard backed his player in the media when asked if he was going to have a word with the striker.

He said: “Why would I speak to him about that?

“I didn’t see an elbow. If you look at him again, there’s no elbow there. The referee saw it and dealt with it. It was a foul and a yellow card and it’s been dealt with. But if you look at it again, next time I see you you’ll say it wasn’t an elbow.”
