Rangers’ Bongani Zungu interest is still alive, but they’ve got competition from Olympiacos and Spain.

Things went very quiet on South African international’s potential move from French club Amiens but The Scotsman understands that the deal is far from dead.

It is a saga that has dragged on for some time now, with Zungu thought to have been close to joining the Ibrox side back in July. However, things hit a snag during discussions and everything seemed to go quiet.

Now though, with Zungu having made his comeback for Amiens as a second-half substitute against Pau in Ligue 2 over the weekend, it is believed that Rangers are very much still in talks over a possible move for the 27-year-old midfielder.

There had been suggestions that the Bafana man had failed a medical – some even reporting that he was overweight – and therefore would not be joining Rangers, though sources have suggested to this publication that his medical went fine and that it was other parts of the discussion that led to a breakdown in talks.

If fitness was the reason it broke down previously, then they surely would have pulled the plug completely.

Now though, with Rangers still said to be in the market for a central midfielder, the Scottish giants appear to face competition from Spain’s La Liga and also Greek powerhouse, Olympiacos, as Zungu weighs up his next move.

Amiens were looking at one stage to give Zungu a new deal before loaning him out in order to increase his market value, but that has not happened at this stage and he will still be free to sign a pre-contract elsewhere come January if a move doesn’t materialise in the current window.

The French second tier outfit were believed to be holding out for around €4m (around £3.6m), although it remains to be seen if they will budge on that figure now that he is just a few months away from entering into the last six months of his contract.

While various options remain for how this saga pans out, which include moves to the UK, Spain, Greece or even a stay in France, the former Vitoria de Guimaraes man will be eager to get things sorted as soon as possible so he can once again focus on his football.
