The 57-year-old has signed up to replicate his Lancashire role in South Wales, having taken the reins at Swansea City’s Academy.

Allen is based nearby in Wales and will begin his new job at the club’s Landore training base, home to ex-Rangers players Declan John and Barrie MacKay, today.

The Championship club’s CEO Julian Winter praised Allen, saying he “was the outstanding choice. He has great experience in football and is familiar with the ethos here.

“He has a proven track record of working with young, talented footballers at Manchester City and preparing them for the first-team environment.

“His success at Glasgow Rangers also stood out, and his involvement there shows he is knowledgeable of the requirements and demands not just at academy level but at senior level too.”

Allen left Rangers in September 2019 and was replaced at Ibrox by Ross Wilson.
