Rangers check out Bongani Zungu injury after South Africa appearances

Steven Gerrard is confident the knee injury sustained by Bongani Zungu on international duty last week will not significantly disrupt the midfielder’s efforts to force his way into the Rangers starting line-up.

Zungu was forced to sit out Sunday’s 4-0 Premiership win over Aberdeen at Ibrox after returning to Glasgow from taking part in two games for South Africa against Sierra Leone.

The 28-year-old, on a season-long loan from French club Amiens with a view to a permanent move to Rangers next summer, made an impressive debut as a half-time substitute in the 8-0 rout of Hamilton Accies just before the international break.

“He has got a knock that we are assessing and checking out at the moment,” said Gerrard. “We don’t think it is big so you could see him on Thursday against Benfica, hopefully. But don’t be surprised if he takes a little bit longer. But it is not a big problem, it is only days rather than weeks or months.”
