Rangers boss Steven Gerrard calls for Covid-19 fairness from SPFL

The SPFL’s 42 clubs have been asked to indicate by midday next Friday whether they would now support the league’s board of directors being authorised to determine a strategy for title wins, promotions and relegations if the 2020-21 campaign cannot be completed.

Rangers were among the clubs opposed to the SPFL’s handling of those issues when last season was suspended in March and ultimately curtailed because of the coronavirus crisis.

Gerrard’s team were 13 points behind Celtic at the top of the table at the time, with a game in hand, two Old Firm matches remaining and 27 points left to play for. After much rancour, Celtic were declared champions by the SPFL on a points-per-game basis.

While Gerrard admits he is reluctant to become too heavily embroiled in the issue, he has urged the SPFL to reach a consensus.

“I hope all the clubs are listened to,” said the Rangers manager. “It’s only fair if all the clubs are listened to and let’s hope they make the right decision for the game of football - what’s fair.

“That’s all I ask for, fairness and clarity, then move forward. I don’t really want to get involved in answering questions about the politics of the game up here in Scotland. It’s out of my control and my remit. I don’t have an influence on what people decide to do.”
