A first-half goal by the impressive Cedric Itten was added to with 20 minutes remaining when Iani Hagi headed the ball in from virtually on the line after Connor Goldson's towering header from Borna Barisic’s free kick hit the woodwork.

The result, combined with Benfica's 2-2 draw with Standard Liege in Belgium, ensured Rangers finished top of the group. The Gers will be seeded in Monday's draw, tthus avoiding a nightmare tie in the next round.

While both pundits sang Rangers’ praises both highlighted the performances by Goldson and Itten in their post-match summarising.

Former Ibrox striker McCoist said: “I was surprised; I thought it would be tougher for Rangers but they played ever so well.

"Itten's goal was wonderful.”

Chris Sutton added: “It’s a stunning finish and good for him. He hasn’t had a lot of opportunities and Rangers now have three good strikers in Kemar Roofe, Alfredo Morelos, and Itten. It’s brilliant for Steven Gerrard.

"Connor Goldson has been outstanding all season; a rock at the back.”

McCoist questioned the Poznan defence's role in the second goal.

"I know that forwards react in these instances but there are FOUR Poznan defenders standing in a line in the six-yard box refusing to get back and defend.

"But it was a great performance again from Rangers. A smashing result, clean sheet, top of the group.

"The money is vital and winning the group makes a difference in terms of the opposition in the next round. All in all, a wonderful night for Gerrard.”
